April 2005 Recap- Calico Ghost Town

Greetings 109ers,

Well we finally had our first real ride of the year!

We were blessed with six new riders joining us for the ride to Calico Ghost Town.  It was a beautiful day with temperatures reaching into the low 80’s.  This ride was a very simple one involving only freeway driving up the 15 freeway to Peggy Sues for Breakfast/lunch.  If anyone has ever been here for breakfast before you know how generous the portions are and how big the food bar is to pick from.  In attendance were two National Officers, Vince Greva and Mark Vrabel (also members of 109)!

Chad Hasbrouck was voted in as a new member of our chapter.  As you know sometimes a little financial influence carries the vote and Chad’s dad, Don held up his unlimited American Express card and Chad was immediately voted in.  With all the joking aside we are proud to have Chad as our latest member of Chapter 109.

Speaking of Chad, and our raffle……  Chad won the Star blanket donated by Yamaha of Cucamonga.  It is a beautiful addition to anyone’s bedroom with the Star logo and bikes sewed onto the blanket.

Jay also donated a beautiful Yamaha coffee cup and a free service on your motorcycle this time around.  Believe me you are going to miss out on some really nice prizes this year if you don’t come out and play with us.

Part of the announcements included the acceptance for next year’s Southwest Star B Q to be held here in Southern California with two other local chapters, #345 and #230. We plan on making this the biggest and best Star B Q ever!  There will be more news later

The fifty-fifty and raffle ticket prizes went to some of our new riders which I’m sure will get them to visit us again!

By the way I must mention our new riders names: Mike and Sue Guzman, Bob Herbert, Robert Grant, Yolanda and Victor Alamillo. Yolanda and Victor even brought their kids since they each ride their own bikes.  Sounds like a pretty good way to keep the family together on a weekend.  It’ great to see so many new people show up!  Thanks everyone…

When all the food was eaten and all the prizes were given away we headed off to Calico which was only three miles away.  If you have ever seen this place you will know this was a real mining town and has tours into some of the caves.  Some of the highlights include gunfights and a yearly civil war re-enactment  with cannons, muzzle loading rifles and a battle between the north and south from our civil war.  You needed to bring some money as the shops that go up Main Street are full of trinkets hard to resist, as was the company from our best and new friends that day.  After unsuccessfully trying to sing along with the guy doing kariyoke (country music) in the upper restaurant we proceeded to evacuate the town before I was put in jail.

The return trip was uneventful back down the 15 freeway.  The ride was called at “Logan’s Roadhouse” where nachos and ribs were had by everyone and great conversation between some of our new and old riders sparked new friendships and hopefully new members.

Well we are off to a new adventure this week.  The annual Laughlin River Run with just a few thousand  people like us.  Hope to see you there.
